So this weekend it was announced that Matt Smith will be stepping down as the 11th Doctor. This has set the Internet in a froth of speculation as to who will step into the TARDIS as the 12th Doctor. It's true that I'm woefully behind on Doctor Who. I'm still in the Tennant run and have seen none of Matt Smith's work. That being said, I'm excited by the idea of a new Doctor. Rather than try to guess who's going to be Who, I'm going to play the What If game. Here is a list of people I think would rock the Doctor role.
You know him as The Operative in Serenity, or as the glorious Lola in Kinky Boots. He has tremendous depth as an actor, but I think he would really shine if exploring the sadness and loneliness inherent in the character.
2. Helen Mirren
This has nothing to do with the fact that I want to be as amazing as Ms. Mirren when I grow up. Okay, maybe it does, but that's beside the point. I adore Helen Mirren and think damn near everything she does is magic.
Also? It would be an intriguing story device if the Doctor regenerated into a woman. They've never exactly explained the sexual characteristics of Gallifreyans, so why not? Besides...wouldn't it be hilarious if we met back up with Rose or another former companion when the Doctor is a she? There's all sorts of room for good story material there.
3. Tim Minchin
Actor, singer, comedian... hells yes. Minchin is brilliant and would bring a lovely darkness to the Doctor. (And I'm not just talking about guyliner.) We'd have a much more cynical character to work with. One that could give Eccleston a run for his money. Also? LET THE DOCTOR BE GINGER!!! Besides, someone already went to all the trouble to make this.
Regardless of who they choose to play the Doctor, I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the 12th generation**. Up until last year it was believed that the 12th generation would be the Doctor's last. Imagine if you knew that this was it...that your 900+ years in the universe was almost at an end. What would that do to you? How would that color your adventures? It's something I hope they use, because it has beautiful story potential.
How about you? Who do you hope takes up the sonic screwdriver?
**Edited to add** Chris Kocher brought to my attention that I miscounted, that I said 12th generation and thus implied 13 Doctors. I appreciate the extra eyes to catch me. Way to go Chris.
